What is a student ambassador program?

A student ambassador program is a role where a student represents an organization to other students. Universities use ambassadors to give campus tours and talk to applicants. Companies use them to bring their products to campus. Communities use them to run local events.

In return, ambassadors usually get some mix of pay, free products, training, a network and something strong for their CV. What you actually do depends on the type of program:

Some programs, like Microsoft Learn Student Ambassadors, take minutes to join. Others are highly selective and take only a few students per school.

Why join a student ambassador program?

  • Real experience for your CV: something you did, not just something you studied.
  • A network: people at the company, and ambitious students at other schools around the world.
  • Money and perks: stipends, gift cards, credits and free tools. Here's how to make money as a college student by building AI.
  • Early access: you use new tools before your classmates do.
  • A reference: a program team that knows your work can vouch for you.

The catch: many programs open once a year, take only a few people per school, and close fast. Our list of college and campus ambassador programs shows which ones are open right now.

What students have built

  • Columbia: Elad Hirsh built an internship tracker that finds and verifies real Summer 2027 roles, and became our first campus winner.
  • UCL Build Night: students shipped 30 working web agents in 90 minutes. The winner, Fake Sale Detector, used the Wayback Machine to prove a "sale" price was fake. Here's how to win a hackathon with AI.
  • University of Minnesota: 12 teams designed agents in 60 minutes. Sublet Radar won by pulling sublets from Facebook groups and a login-gated UMN board into one place.

Student ambassador program vs campus ambassador program

The two terms are often used for the same thing. When there is a difference, a campus ambassador usually represents a company on one campus and runs events there, while "student ambassador" is broader: it can be a university role, a company role or an online community role.

TinyFish has both. Everyone starts in the Student Program, and the top builders on a campus become Campus Leads. If you'd rather grow a community than build, the TinyFish Ambassador Program is open to anyone, student or not.
