How to Find Internships in College with an AI Agent (+ Free Tracker Template)

Finding an internship in college is a part-time job on its own. You check twenty career pages, half the roles are already closed, LinkedIn shows you the same five postings, and your tracker spreadsheet is three weeks out of date.
This guide covers both halves of the problem: the classic way to find internships (where to look, when to apply, how to network), and how an AI agent can do the boring parts for you: finding roles on company career pages, checking they're real and still open, and watching for new ones. You'll also get a free internship tracker template you can copy into Google Sheets today.
Last checked: October 2026.
TL;DR
- Apply early: most Summer 2027 internships open between July 2026 and January 2027, and big tech opens first. Applications are usually rolling, so earlier is better.
- Look beyond job boards: go straight to company career pages (Greenhouse, Ashby, Workday, Lever), your university's career portal, and startup boards like YC's.
- Let an AI agent do the searching: with TinyFish in ChatGPT or Claude, an agent can visit career pages, pull open roles, check they're live, and monitor for new ones every day.
- Track everything in one sheet: copy the free template below. An agent can fill it for you.
- Build it for free: students get $35 in their TinyFish wallet at tinyfish.ai/students.
How to find internships in college: the step-by-step
1. Know when to apply
Internship recruiting starts much earlier than most students expect. For Summer 2027, tech applications open from July to October 2026, with mid-size tech and startups following from October onwards. Most companies use rolling applications, so applying in the first couple of weeks after a role opens gives you the best chance.
2. Decide what you're looking for
Pick 2–3 role types (e.g. software engineering, AI/ML, product, data), your preferred locations or remote, and 20–40 companies you'd genuinely like to work at. A focused list beats spraying 300 applications.
3. Look in the right places
- Company career pages (most use Greenhouse, Ashby, Lever or Workday). Roles appear here first.
- Your university's career portal and Handshake, if your school uses it.
- LinkedIn Jobs: filter by "Internship" under experience level, set the date to "Past week", and turn on job alerts.
- Startup boards: Y Combinator's job board, Wellfound and community lists.
- Student communities: Discord servers, club newsletters and GitHub internship lists.
4. Network (yes, really)
- Message alumni at your target companies on LinkedIn with a short, specific ask.
- Go to campus events, hackathons and company workshops. Recruiters and engineers remember people they've met.
- Ask for referrals once you've had a real conversation, not before.
5. Track everything
Keep every role, deadline and contact in one place (template below), and follow up a week after applying.
The boring parts, and how an AI agent handles them
The hardest part of the search isn't applying. It's finding real, open roles and keeping up. That's exactly what a web agent is good at.
- Finding roles on career pages: an agent can visit Greenhouse, Ashby, Workday and company pages directly, not just the job boards.
- Checking they're real and still open: it can open each listing and confirm the role exists and is accepting applications, so you skip dead links and stale reposts.
- Monitoring for new postings: it can check your favourite companies every day and tell you when something new appears.
- Tracking deadlines: it can pull the location, deadline and link straight into your tracker.
TinyFish is one API that lets AI agents use the live web: search, read pages, click through sites and monitor them for changes. You can use it directly inside ChatGPT or Claude, with no code.
Real example: Internship Signal, built at Columbia
At the CUB Columbia AI Club × TinyFish workshop on 2 October 2026, Elad Hirsh built Internship Signal, and won.

It turns internship hunting into a repeatable pipeline. It finds and verifies real Summer 2027 software engineering and AI internships across Greenhouse, Ashby, Workday and YC job boards, then monitors a careers page every day for new roles. It was built with TinyFish in ChatGPT and TinyFish Monitor.
