The internet broke the silos of knowledge. The problem is that we built web interfaces for humans. Browsers. Tabs. Clicks. One decision at a time. The web assumed a person at the keyboard, losing context, forgetting sessions, needing visual affordances. Agents need none of that. They need to get things done.
The Search Problem
Search solved a human problem. We can't evaluate a million options, so systems ranked and filtered them down to ten. That was the right interface for creatures with limited attention and finite working memory.
Agents don't share those constraints. They can evaluate the million options. What they can't do is act on them.
An agent doesn't need a ranked list of flights. It needs a flight booked. The ranking was never the goal, it was a waypoint for humans who had to make the final decision themselves. Agents skip the waypoint. They need the outcome.
Search organized information for human consumption. What's missing is infrastructure that makes information operable, that lets machines execute against it, not just retrieve it.
Why the Web is Hostile to Agents
Agents cannot operate the web reliably today. The reasons are structural.
Frontends ship breaking changes continuously. DOMs mutate. Elements move between releases. Feature flags alter flows mid-session. A workflow that executed yesterday fails today because a button moved thirty pixels or a form added a field.
Anti-bot systems treat all automation as hostile. CAPTCHAs, fingerprint checks, rate limits, session traps. The web's security model assumes a human at the browser. Every automation attempt triggers defenses designed to block exactly that behavior.
Authentication flows presume human presence. Multi-factor challenges, session timeouts, cookie policies, OAuth redirects. The plumbing of identity on the web was never designed for unattended machine operation.
These aren't bugs. They're the architecture of a system built for different users. The web was optimized for humans who need visual affordances. Agents need stable contracts and reliable execution.
Why This Has to Be Infrastructure
The approaches currently in the market are applications, not infrastructure.
RPA tools record and replay clicks on a fragile DOM. They break constantly and require human maintenance proportional to the number of workflows. Labor arbitrage, not scalable infrastructure.
Browser agents use LLM inference to guess which pixel to click next. They're trapped in the ergonomics of human UIs, inheriting all the ambiguity and latency that implies. Model inference on every action is expensive and slow.
Agentic search enriches queries with semantic understanding but still delivers links, not outcomes. A waypoint, not a destination.
Infrastructure does something different. It absorbs complexity so layers above it don't have to. It provides stable abstractions over unstable substrates. It lets applications focus on intent while handling the mechanics of execution.
